Charlie Pendry’s Talking Heads
Interactive installation commissioned by Riksutstillinger (Norwegian NAtional Touring Exhibitions) for the DETOX ’99 exhibition.
The audience/user is invited into a Victorian freakshow booth, where they may buy (for one kroner) a meeting with a disembodied ‘talking head’ – representative of one decade in the 20th century.
The piece involved the creation and performance of multiple personalities and story-lines, and was an intimate experience with only one user able to access the booth at a time.
Although categorised as interactive electronic art, Charlie Pendry’s Talking Heads deliberately capitalised on the old school mechanical money-in-the-slot, push-a-button system, and the assumption that even adults still respond emotionally and neurologically to this ritual.
All characters created, written and performed by Pendry.
